Vehicle Reviewed: Ford Fiesta 2009 WS Zetec

A genuine leap ahead compared with previous generation WQ model. Build quality impressive for a little car at this price point. Cosseting, comfortable to ride in. No reliability hiccups after a year of ownership. Zetec well packaged with Bluetooth, cruise control, DSP, curtain airbags etc. As with most Euro-sourced Fords, it's an engaging and involving drive, the steering is quick with nice feel, gearshift and brakes lovely and a characterful and perky engine returning less than 7.0l/100km whatever the conditions. Brilliant chassis and suspension tuning, somehow it manages to absorb most of the nasty road imperfections thrown at it whilst maintaining firm, flat handling on the limit. Rear seats fold to swallow 2 small filing cabinets, and it is a very handsome little car.
Not all are the same though. Note that the first WS Fiestas were built in Germany, before production was later switched to Thailand (toward end 2010 I think) Numerous sources in the motoring press have noted that the build quality of the German cars appears to be superior. I can't comment on this, however the German Zetec cars were better equipped, and included reach adjustment for steering, adjustable rear head-rests, a softer touch higher quality dashboard which were all cut from the Thai-sourced cars. The earlier cars were able to be optioned with 17in wheels also.
The automatic was a slug, and only received a 1.4 litre until Thai-production when it finally got the same 1.6 as the manual, and an improved auto gearbox. Link

The base model 1.8 petrol engine has been used for many years by Holden/Opel. This is not a new motor, but was trotted out to offer a base cost Cruze. With relatively high tech turbocharged 1.4 petrol and turbo-diesel engines available in the Cruze, one would be strongly advised to try these motors alongside the 1.8 for comparison.
